Ultimate Downgrade: Three videogames presented in 15 pixels
The visual language of videogames never ceases to astonish me. It’s a form of expression so deeply iconic that even when broken down into the most basic forms, the raw visual elements are still almost instantly recognizable to those familiar with the source material. Created by UK design collective Alaskan Military School, these three animations, which illustrate the essence of Street Fighter II, Parappa the Rapper and Noby Noby Boy within a 15 pixel grid, are a true testament to this phenomenon, and definitely one of the most effective minimalist tributes to videogames I’ve ever seen.
The animations were commissioned by the organizers of GameCity, a UK videogames festival happening at the end of this month. “I think this approach echoes the values of the festival,” says event organizer David Surman, “…to take a sideways look at games, and foster a creative space.” GameCity will be taking place October 28—30th in Nottingham, UK. You can get more deets over on the fest’s official website.
