Chiptune songstress Leeni has released a free remix album, 8 bit Heart Restart. Head on over to Crunchy Co and grab it. Please note that the album cover is filled with cats, who are (as many fellow Tumblrites might agree) superior to sharks.

Also, don’t forget that Leeni will be performing with Anamanaguchi on September 3rd at the Comet Tavern in Seattle, just prior to the start of this year’s Penny Arcade Expo. I’ll be there, and so should you!

Anamanaguchi, A_Rival, Starpause and Crashfaster are playing at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco this Sunday. If you’re in the SF area, make sure not to miss it. Duty Cycle has more info, plus a free show sampler.

In anticipation of Crystal Labs’ upcoming indie adventure game ‘High Strangeness’, Pause Music has released a free sampler of the game’s soundtrack composed by Rich Vreeland (aka Disasterpeace). Thanks to its financial backers on Kickstarter, the project recently met its funding goal of $1,500 and will be releasing in 2010. Needless to say, I’m really looking forward to this game, and so should you.

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Rich Vreeland and Andy Baio, two of the people behind the recently released 8-bit Miles Davis tribute album, Kind of Bloop. Check out the full story on GameMusic4All.

“Chiptunes” by Funnelbc (click for larger image).

I love the controllers’ Start/Select button eyes, closed in contemplation. I imagine they’re caught up in the song, swaying with the music and enjoying the Game Boy’s euphonic, digital voice.

Funnelbc painted a another charming piece starring the Game Boy and a mustachioed NES controller sharing an umbrella, which you can admire here.

Sample of “Blue in Green” (Miles Davis cover) by Sergeeo.

This 30-second snippet comes from Kind of Bloop, the 8-bit tribute album to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, released 50 years ago today. The chiptune compilation features five covers of the Jazz great’s songs from Ast0r, Disasterpeace, Sergeeo, Shnabubula, and Virt.

If you donated to the Kind of Bloop project months ago when we first mentioned it, you can grab the five tracks as MP3s or FLACs now. For the rest of you, you can preview the songs and come back this Thursday to purchase the digital download album for $5.

Like the 8Bitone synthesizer app, NESynth lets you create 80s-style music with 8-bit sounds. But the coolest part: You can control it all with an on-screen NES-style gamepad. Watch the rockin’ video after the jump to see what I mean.

Also fun is the $2 app’s use of the iPhone’s accelerometer to pitch-bend sounds, and its ability to let you jam along with a friend—and hear what they’re playing on your phone.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since Mother, the game that started Shigesato Itoi’s quirky RPG trilogy debuted on the Japanese Famicom. When I first played Earthbound (Mother 2) for the SNES, I was immediately stricken by the music. I’m convinced that there is no other possible score that could properly and effectively convey this game’s unusual sense of humor and charming, unabashed optimism. The more I write music, the more I begin to realize the incredible impact this game’s soundtrack has had on my creative endeavors. Mother is a truly inspiring musical odyssey, and a landmark achievement in sound for video games.

So, what better way to celebrate two decades of Mother than by riding around town on your bicycle, launching bottle rockets at sunglasses-wearing crows and listening to Bound Together, the fantastic JoeCam-curated Earthbound remix tribute album. If you’re a fan of Earthbound/Mother and you’ve never heard Bound Together, you’re in for a treat.

48 quality rearrangements by a plethora of musicians from OverClocked Remix, OneUp Studios and VGmix comprise this absolutely stellar volume. The album is of course free-to-download, as many worthwhile things are. Click the download link below!

Happy MOTHER’s Day!

The ending credits sequence to the anime, Slap Up Party: Arad Senki, consisting of super-rad pixel animation and a song by FamiPop superstar trio YMCK. Kinda makes me interested in watching the series, but I’m probably better off just watching this sequence continuously.
