"Dolven" by Wiley Wiggins

You might know Wiley Wiggins best as the actor who played the kid in Dazed & Confused, Waking Life and various other Richard Linklater films, but I assure you he’s far from a one-trick pony – Hacker, designer and video artist Wiggins has crafted this haunting and evocative piece using altered clips from the Italian horror film Stridulum and glitched artifacts from RAM-corrupted NES ROMs run through a patch in Quartz Composer.

Like he mentions in his statement, it can be a bit exhausting to see this kind of aesthetic constantly presented alongside electronic music, and his use of the ambient soundtrack by Amasa Gana is a refreshingly different yet still amazingly cohesive change of pace.

Music Update: 1st Single Out Now, New Music Coming Soon

UPDATE: It looks like Bandcamp got the message, and are now offering to ‘refresh’ everyone’s free download allowances back up to 200 at the end of every month. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Greetings, fellows and female fellows. I’ve been all over the place this month in Seattle, PhilIy and New York with little time for a formal blog post, so I thought I’d take a minute to update everyone on what’s happening with the release of my new material and upcoming EP. Right now I’m trying to deliver some new stuff to y’all free of charge (with option to donate). However, the music service I’ve established myself on, Bandcamp, is making this very difficult, as they’ve recently decided to start limiting and charging artists for free downloads.

Bandwidth is obviously a legitimate concern, but unfortunately, this sudden and poorly thought out paradigm shift to mandatory monetization has made me realize that using Bandcamp as a distribution platform (as snazzy as it is) will be virtually impossible for an EP release.

I’m currently finishing recording and looking into other options, but in the meantime, I’m going to be putting up the first of my two single (which is half of the micro CD I started selling at PAX) on Bandcamp for free. If the free downloads start to run out, I’ll switch to a ‘pay-what-you-want’ download, with a minimum price of however low they’ll let me go without needing to buy more free downloads. This was not my original plan, but I’ve chosen to do it at least for a little while I try to break even on the physical printing and figure out how to best deliver my stuff to y’all. Thanks for bearing with me.

Also, if you’re an artist and find yourself similarly perplexed by Bandcamp’s new model, fellow chiptune artist Christian Montoya has written a concise list of alternatives for Bandcamp users who want to offer their fans free music.

You can grab the new single below. PLEASE donate, if you can!

Note: The audio in the Bandcamp stream is garbled for some reason, but don’t worry: the actual MP3 download is clean as a whistle. Please pardon the dust while I figure out what’s wrong with the stream.

Chip music is coming to Seattle’s Penny Arcade Expo in a big way this year. If you’ve been to PAX before, you’ve probably seen Lo-Tek Resistance, the annual chiptune street busking performance held (unofficially) in front of the convention center by members of Crunchy Co Records. Featuring chip artists local to the Seattle area (and some special guests from afar), Lo-Tek has quickly picked up a lot of attention among PAX attendees and organizers. This year marks a milestone for the event, and I’m proud to announce that I’ll be performing with Fighter X, Spamtron, Knife City and Seanbad at PAX’s very first official Chiptune Music Showcase, taking place in the Jamspace room of the Washington State Convention Center on Saturday, September 4th at 1PM.

In addition to that, Crunchy Co will be running a chiptunes panel on Friday, September 3rd at 11AM in the Wolfman Theatre. Now’s your chance to learn how chip music os made and performed from some of the world’s top 8-bit artists. Panelists will include Peter Berkman of Anamanaguchi, Nickolas Walthew of Fighter X and Gabe Hayward of KGHB.

Last but certainly not least, 2 Player Productions, creators of the massive, soon-to-be-released chiptune documentary Reformat The Planet will be having their own panel and screening Penny Arcade TV, their documentary series on Penny Arcade creators Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins on Friday, September 3rd at 5PM in the Serpent Theatre. Make sure to say hi and pick up a copy of the RFTP DVD.

Check out this thread for more info. See you there!
